The history of paradigm shifts in drug discovery

Drug discovery is an endeavour that has accompanied human civilizations from their inception. Mankind has used every remedy they could possibly find to treat diseases and mitigate symptoms of different disorders. Starting with the observation of nature, which allowed to identify the therapeutic potential of many plants populating ancient medicine manuals, to the emergence of the first pharmaceutical companies in the XIX century and until the present day, a number of scientific and technological developments, particularly frequent and disruptive across the last decades, have shaped the way drug discovery has been approached through the years and how we face it today. This talk will review some of the key scientific findings and technological achievements that can be considered as paradigm shifts in the drug discovery field, as those having a most profound influence in the progress of medicine, as well as in the development and foreseeable future of the modern biopharmaceutical industry.
